SMCL: STEAM Youth In-Person Programming Comes to SMCL

Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Math, or STEAM for short, are a collective set of disciplines identified as being of critical importance to young learners and in the competitive and fast-paced job market. ‘today. We are committed to providing quality youth programs, starting with Grades 2 to 5 programs that introduce and reinforce these concepts. Starting in October, we’ll be offering in-person and outdoor programs that match these core areas. All equipment and supplies will be provided for these activities, so kids just need to show up ready to have fun and learn something new while they’re at it! Check out our Event calendar for the dates and times of each of our Pitches. Register in advance to reserve a spot. Walk-ins will be welcome depending on availability.

Science: Bath Fizzers – October

Participants will create their own creation that will trigger a fun, bubbly and harmless chemical reaction during bath time. In addition to bringing home a homemade sparkling bath, the youngsters will leave with an understanding of the basic processes that make bath sparkling possible as well as the recipe for reproducing the pleasure again and again at home!

Technology: Bobble Bots – November

During this construction, learners will build a self-propelled “robot” using a motor and a button cell. The concepts of electricity, circuits and positive and negative charges will be discussed during the activity. Participants will be encouraged to decorate their creations to personalize their robots to foster the creativity that has been found to be so important in the development of learners.

Engineering: Design of a latch – December

Have you ever watched how a door is kept closed? Functional locks are complex systems that can be a real challenge to replicate with everyday materials. This project will ask learners to create a functional locking system that can be secured and repeatedly opened using an array of different crafting materials. Of course, thinking about design and storytelling during this activity is strongly encouraged and participants will have plenty of opportunities to push their creativity to its limits.

Art: Sewn Stuffies – January

Think of this program as “Build-a-Bear”, but with even more space for young people to personalize and personalize their creations. They can work from the templates provided or create their own template. This program emphasizes the process of making these toys from start to finish and asks the young participants to really consider and enjoy the design process while having a good time. A special note that this activity will involve the use of sharp tools such as needles and scissors.

Mathematics: Origami – February

Celebrate the Lunar New Year while exploring the mathematical concepts of symmetry, geometry, and pattern as you learn how to make an origami tiger and paper envelope. Additional templates and projects will be provided to inspire customization.
